PDO Cider from Asturias
The Protected Designation of Origin links a cider with Asturias through three elements: origin of the raw material, production process and quality control. The protected area includes the municipalities of the Principality, but only plots, varieties and registered operators that comply with the specifications can be certified.
The DOP covers specific categories, including natural cider and natural sparkling cider. Not all cider made in Asturias belongs to the DOP, nor does the absence of the seal in itself imply a lack of quality: it means that it is not certified under that system.
How the origin is controlled
The Regulatory Council inspects registered pumaradas, verifies varieties, contrasts fruit deliveries and reviews declarations from producers and mills. The numbered back label allows the certified product to be identified within that traceability chain.
